Flamingos are causing havoc for farmers in northeastern Italy by ravaging rice crops in flooded fields. The birds, which have recently migrated to the area, use their webbed feet to disturb the soil and feed on mollusks, algae, and insects. This behavior is damaging the rice seedlings and affecting the production of risotto in Ferrara province. Farmers are struggling to find a solution to this unexpected pest problem.
