Two United Nations reports released on Tuesday indicate that the global transition to renewable energy has reached a positive tipping point, with solar and wind power becoming cheaper and more widespread. Last year, 74% of the growth in electricity generated worldwide came from green sources, and 92.5% of new electricity capacity added was from renewables. Solar and wind power are now significantly cheaper than fossil fuels, with solar power being 41% cheaper and wind power 53% cheaper globally. Despite the progress, the switch to renewable energy is not happening fast enough, with developing countries in Africa lagging behind due to high capital costs. The reports emphasize that a clean energy future is not only possible but likely inevitable, as renewables continue to drive down costs and make fossil fuel power less desirable.
